Polaris returns to Lincoln Hall with REPO this weekend

December 9-11 @ 7:30 p.m.
@ Lincoln Performance Hall
Polaris Dance Theatre is thrilled to announce its return to Lincoln Hall this fall with REPO, a journey of creative reflection from Artistic Director, Robert GuitronREPO is a retrospective of Polaris works dating back to the launch of the company in 2002. Surviving the lean years of recession has presented a wonderful opportunity to take stock of past works, to rethink, retool and repossess them.  Seats are filling up fast.  Order your tickets now!
As a dancer I am endlessly fascinated with how we use our bodies as our outer shells to communicate with one another and the miscommunication that often results” says Mr. Guitron.
To develop this theme, works from Polaris repertory such as Solomente and Red Tied from the 2006 Scapes production have been selected for the program.  Below is the program giving an in depth description about each individual piece and how they were created.
Solomente performed in 2006
SOLOMENTE:
Transports us to a mythical realm of beings that have climbed out of their shells and live in complete knowledge of each other’s thoughts, emotions, motives and desires. The resulting world is at once utopian and dystopian. Living with this kind of transparency may be liberating and joyful yet also overwhelming and violent. In the end the piece poses the question that given the choice, would we all prefer to climb back into the safety of our shells.
RED TIED:
Red Tied performed in 2006
An exploration of the individual from the perspective of familial, religious and cultural influences.
“As adults,” observes Mr. Guitron, “whether we accept or reject these influences they are a part of us, inform our opinions and color our personalities and relationships with others.”
In Mr. Guitron’s artistic vision, these inescapable influences are symbolically represented by huge swatches of red fabric suspended from the ceiling. These swatches wrap around and bind individual dancers, preventing them from interacting freely with one another.
LEGIONS:
Legions performed in 2008
An excerpt from a larger work-in-progress called “Stand Down” a reference to the military command used to dismiss soldiers from duty. This command marks the transition from soldier to civilian. Legions is a excerpt of what that transition involves when our troops return home; their struggle to assimilate in civilian life, to reconnect with family and friends and to find themselves. Stand Down will ultimately become a work presented in collaboration with organizations supporting the rehabilitation of our troops. Polaris is currently seeking funding for this project.
Polaris dancers rehearsing on the soft box
CLING:
new work with aerial choreography on a device called a “soft box.” This cage-like piece, which Mr. Guitron had custom designed for the company, allows dancers to move in vertical space in groups of 3 and 4. The movement must be carefully choreographed as the apparatus is soft and gives as one dancer’s weight pulls it in different directions. This in turn affects other dancers’ positioning.
“It’s a complicated process and we are having a great time exploring all the different possibilities,” says Mr. Guitron.
Polaris Dance Theatre is enthusiastic to perform REPO this weekend with new and old dance company members to new and old audience guests. After all the hard, long and tiring work each dancer and Robert put into the hours of rehearsal leading up to this weekend, they are excited to see it all come together and perform an original and emotional performance. Polaris would like to thank the multiple donations received from it's large group of supporters who made it possible to create such a unique device (the soft box) for this performance and thankfully be able to pay the dancers for all their hard work in rehearsal.

Tickets are available online at box office tickets.  Get your tickets today before it's too late!
